This I’ve Learned

I WAS THINKING…
about watching my neighbor get a new roof. The men were working on a hot, windy day. It made me realize how some people need to work really hard every day. The weather doesn’t make a difference. Gosh, I feel a little guilty. I don’t even want to walk to the mailbox when it’s too hot.

WHY DO WE CARVE PUMKINGS?
(Taken from the Old Farmer’s Almanac)
Turnip lanterns were used before the pumpkin jack-O-lantern. In ancient Ireland, revelers hollowed out turnips and carved a demon face to frighten away spirits. They placed a candle or smothering coal inside. It was then placed in windows to scare off evil spirits and welcome deceased loved ones. Irish immigrants arriving in the early 1800s found it was easier to carve pumpkins instead of turnips.

LET’S TALK ABOUT HOUSEPANTS
If you have Ivy or other hanging plants that get too long, try this. Pin them back into the soil with a hair pin (or whatever). Eventually they will root, giving a much lusher plant.
Give the leftover (cooled) water from steam vegetables to houseplants. They love the vitamins. Also, leftover black coffee or plain tea can be given to houseplants.
Treat a plant to the humidity by keeping it in bathroom for a week. It will love the moisture.

THIS I’VE LEARNED
Often we don’t exercise or do somethings we used to enjoy doing because we use our age as an excuse. Perhaps we shouldn’t ‘give-in’ too soon. Maybe just a little adjustment in attitude will give us the motivation to continue to do more. Think about it!
